Port Wemyss sits at the very south-western tip of Islay — as far as the road goes. Getting here takes a little planning, but the journey is part of the experience.
Step 1 – Getting to Islay
Ferry or flight
There are two ways to reach Islay from the mainland. For most guests the ferry is the better choice — it carries your car, your luggage, and as much as you can bring.
CalMac Ferry
Sail from Kennacraig on the Kintyre peninsula to Port Askaig or Port Ellen. The crossing takes just over 2 hours. Both ports are around 40 minutes drive from Burnside Lodge.
Glasgow to Kennacraig: approx. 3 hrs drive
Booking ahead is essential if bringing a vehicle
Fèis Ìle (May/June): ferries fill very quickly.
Loganair Flight
Fly from Glasgow Airport direct to Islay Airport in around 45 minutes. Quickest option but more expensive, and no car – best for a short trip or travelling light.
2 weekday flights, 1 at weekends
Car hire: Islay Car Hire / Cresswells
Both will meet you at the airport.
Taxis: Islay Taxis / Bruichladdich Taxis.
Island travel tip
Island life can be disrupted by weather or ferry changes — we recommend travel insurance and building flexibility into your plans. You really need a car to see the best of the island and to eat out in the evenings. Happy to help with any travel questions before you arrive.
Step 2 – Getting to port wemyss
From the ferry or airport

Head for Port Charlotte
From Bowmore, Port Ellen or Port Askaig, head for Port Charlotte. Then follow the road (A847) towards Portnahaven.
Port Charlotte is 7 miles from Port Wemyss

Look for the 30mph sign
Seven miles from Port Charlotte you’ll reach the outskirts of the villages and see a 30mph sign. Turn left towards the lighthouse, then right when you reach the telephone box T-junction.

Burnside Lodge - last house before the bridge
Burnside Lodge is the last house before the bridge. If you miss the turning and go on into Portnahaven, take the next left and you’ll arrive from the other direction. Postcode: PA47 7ST.

Getting around Islay
By car
The most practical way to explore. Single-track roads - use passing places and take your time. Car hire: Islay Car Hire or Cresswells, both at the airport.
By bus
The 450/451 service links Port Wemyss to Port Charlotte, Bowmore, the ferry terminals, and the airport.
By taxi
Islay Taxis and Bruichladdich Taxis both offer island-wide services. Worth booking ahead during festival season.
Walks
There are various quiet coastal walks direct from the property, or local guidebooks are available here if you are going further afield.
